Liverpool. A Visit From A Queen.

There was a Royal visitor to the River Mersey this week, Cunard’s Queen Mary II, currently the largest cruise liner afloat at 79,000 tonnes. Don’t worry I won’t be hitting you over the head with long lists of facts and figures. Just selection of images from the evening. That said the liner has it’s own planetarium for all you seagoing stargazers.

The Cunard Line’s connection with Liverpool goes back to the awarding of the first steamship mail contract in the 1830’s, linking Liverpool with Halifax, Nova Scotia and Boston in the USA. So the visit from the Queen Mary II was something of a homecoming.

The excellent Mersey Ferries had laid on special river cruises while the giant ship was here and dominating the Pier Head. The scheduled time for the ship to leave was seven thirty pm but as is the way with these things that slipped a little. However the time didn’t drag as entertainment was in the care of the harmonious voices of the Poppies singing trio. This meant that when the ship finally slipped it’s moorings and moved away from the Pier Head and into the river, with a cascade of fireworks mixed with goodbyes heralding departure. the sun began a beautiful setting over the Wirral and the Irish Sea.
