Woodside landing stage and the Pier Head facing one another across the Mersey. Two cities each with their own identity and rivalries sharing a river and a maritime history. They’re stitched together by the ferries that battle their way across a sometimes truculent river, by railway lines that dive deep under the water and by car carrying concrete tubes that disgorge a constant buzz of traffic.
On this brisk November morning a ferryboat docks on the Birkenhead side with its cargo of hardy river travellers while the Liverpool waterfront glows in an unexpected break in the sullen skies. The Three Graces overlooking the river have to fight a bit harder now for attention as the skyscrapers close in.
