Well the year is slowly catching on to the idea that it has more seasons in its repertoire than Winter, to that end I chanced a train rip down to Shrewsbury, a favourite location of mine, nestling away in its loop of the River Severn. It’s a straightforward journey and not too long from my local station, an advantage at this time of the year when the days are not long and darkness swoops in like a pantomime villain in the early evening.

While I like exploring new places, there’s also a relaxing vibe in having a few familiar places tucked away in your back pocket. Places you can just drop in on like an old friend, no agenda just catch up, enjoy the moment and relax.

I wasn’t expecting much on the weather front but the day laid on a real treat of blue skies and sunshine. A bracing coolness to the day true enough but so good to be out of the house after too long a winter’s lifeless grey.

I made my way around, the town was busy, very busy. The sunshine bringing people out from their mole state and blinking into the crisp cool daylight. I touched base with my usual suspects, coffee, food and beer. Then far too early the day decided to reach for the dimmer switch and the light began to put on its hat and coat and head for the door. The sunlight began to lose it’s dominance over the emerging street light as people, like me began their journey home.

It had been a good trip out, kick starting the year, getting the ball rolling for 2025. Thank you Shrewsbury, see you again very soon.
