SHREWSBURY. A Walk On A Sunny February Saturday.

In Shrewsbury, when they say old…………..they mean old

Well the year is slowly catching on to the idea that it has more seasons in its repertoire than Winter, to that end I chanced a train rip down to Shrewsbury, a favourite location of mine, nestling away in its loop of the River Severn. It’s a straightforward journey and not too long from my local station, an advantage at this time of the year when the days are not long and darkness swoops in like a pantomime villain in the early evening.

The Shrewsbury Coffee House. Usually my first stop on arrival. Out of the station and just across the road, coffee and assemble my thoughts and plans for the day. See below.

While I like exploring new places, there’s also a relaxing vibe in having a few familiar places tucked away in your back pocket. Places you can just drop in on like an old friend, no agenda just catch up, enjoy the moment and relax.

The Band Stand in the Quarry Gardens, with a background of nudist trees enjoying the sunshine. Hopefully it won’t be too long before their leaves arrive.

I wasn’t expecting much on the weather front but the day laid on a real treat of blue skies and sunshine. A bracing coolness to the day true enough but so good to be out of the house after too long a winter’s lifeless grey.

A group of crocuses trumpet towards the sun down by the River Severn.
I always pay the market a visit, it’s a proper one that sells the kind of food you want to eat and things you want to use. The selections available are stunning.
Leek and potato soup anyone? Still a bit on the cool side.
Pick your joint at your leisure.
I had a bite of lunch while I was in the market, you would have to try really hard not to find something to your taste, I ate at Tom’s Table , this was a roast pepper tart with a salad selection, nice and healthy. It wasn’t to last…..

I made my way around, the town was busy, very busy. The sunshine bringing people out from their mole state and blinking into the crisp cool daylight. I touched base with my usual suspects, coffee, food and beer. Then far too early the day decided to reach for the dimmer switch and the light began to put on its hat and coat and head for the door. The sunlight began to lose it’s dominance over the emerging street light as people, like me began their journey home.

Walking back into the town centre from the River, what did I see?
Hmm, Gelastry, I know it was a cold day but it is gorgeous ice cream.
Checking my watch I realised I had time for a drink, well fancy that. There are many pubs in Shrewsbury, on this visit I paid his Majesty a visit.
Slumbering Monk was my pint of choice.

It had been a good trip out, kick starting the year, getting the ball rolling for 2025. Thank you Shrewsbury, see you again very soon.
