The travels, musings and thoughts of a man and his camera.

LANCASTER & MORECAMBE. More Sunshine.

The good weather made an encore appearance this weekend just gone so I grabbed it by the throat and headed for the coast. I’d set my sights on Morecambe, get some fresh sea air and make a start on blowing away the Winter doldrums and cobwebs and as daylight is still nose diving around the six thirty mark there was little point in travelling too far.

Lancaster’s imposing castle, dominating the town from its hilltop.

The journey is a well practised one, train from Wigan up to Lancaster, then train onwards into Morecambe. If time’s available like today I#ll have a walk around Lancaster, Saturday is a market day and the street market always adds that extra buzz to the place with the stalls wrapped around the City’s museum on Market Square.

The railway station, a stop on the route north to Scotland via the Lake District, rarely not busy.
First order of business, a bacon roll and coffee while I collect my thoughts.
Fresh fish from the market clustered around the former town hall, now the museum.
A museum well worth a visit.
Flowers at the Saturday Market on Cheapside, time for a bit of colour.
The sun shines on Penny and brings out the crowds.

Back past the castle as I head down to the bus station, the crocuses as splash of colour against the grey fortress.

After a couple of hours there it was time to move on to Morecambe, it was a choice of bus or train, the next bus would be leaving before the train so that decision was taken care of, so it was a wander down to the bus station, I took a walk past the imposing frontage of the Castle before heading down through the network of narrow streets to the bus station and the bus.

It’s only a short journey, over the river then up into Morecambe town centre. The daylight was holding up well considering how changeable the weather has been lately. I took a walk around, the town centre then up to the Stone Jetty where people were braving the “brisk” breezes whipping their way across the wide expanse of the Bay.

Blowing off the cobwebs of Winter and kick starting the new season.
The Stone Jetty, the Cafe on the end was once one of the town’s railway station. It might be bright but the breeze coming in off the Bay certainly lets yopu know it’s there.
A lighthouse in miniature at the Jetty’s end.
The lonely wait for the next tide.
The Tide Bell, ready to chime out the tide’s arrival.
Remembering a favourite son of the town.

By now the daylight was starting to pack up its bucket and spade and make plans to head off and that was my hint to do similar. Again the bus got me back into Lancaster and walking up to the railway station I passed the John O’ Gaunt, a favourite stopping off place and there was time to refresh myself for the train home, lucky that…..

Evening arrives with due ceremony, time to make tracks.
Time for that pint at the Johm O Gaunt before the train.
