GRANGE over SANDS. A Day On The Bay.

The Lido at the end of the PRomenade is slowly coming back to life after too many years in the wilderness. Not sure when the re-opening is due to take place, but whenever it is it will be a good reason to pay the town another visit.

The year is slowly dragging itself out of the winter slump, though sunshine is still as unlikely as a win on the lottery. So when the big yellow thing appears in the sky you don’t hesitate but just grab your coat and head out of the door before the weather changes its mind.

A weekend or so back was just such a day, it was a moment of decision over an early morning coffee to pick Grange over Sands as my destination for the day. It’s a pleasant run up, a blast up the West Coast Main Line, then at Carnforth station of Brief Encounter fame, the line swings to the left and heads towards the Cumbrian coast through Silverdale, then Arnside before skimming across the River Kent Viaduct and pulling into Grange station. It was approaching midday by now so food was a priority.

Lunch enjoyed I made my way back to the station, through the underpass and onto the Promenade, built by the Furness Railway as it constructed the line through the town. Flanked by flowerbeds its and attractive stretch with views over Morecambe Bay.

The clocks hadn’t changed yet so the day was already creeping to a close so I headed back to the station and started my journey back home.

A station in sunshine. Grange over Sands station is a little gem, perched between the town and Morecambe Bay. It was built by the Furness Railway on their line from Barrow in Furness to Lancaster. This train’s destination will be Barrow, a few more curving, coast hugging miles on.
A short walk from the station took me to Cafe Grange and it was war enough to take the risk of dining al fresco. I thought I would celebrate the day’s burst of sunshine with a quiche and a salad. I didn’t go too healthy, I follwed this up with a scone and cream. Well you have to don’t you.

One of the town’s features is the Clocktower standing high on the cotner of Main Street which climbs up from the railway station and the ornamental gardens.
A bit of background for the clock and its place in the town’s history.
A splash of colour along the promenade.
I made a wish………….not won the lottery yet………………..
Almost at the end of the Promenade by the re awakening Lido. Looking back towards the railway station.
Looking across the Bay to Morecambe.
Nearly back at the railway station, one last bridge to cross, the setting sun making the rails shine.
