COLWYN BAY. A Sunny Day Before The Shortest Day.

Right a new year has eased itself into life and is beginning to trundle off into the distance. So it’s time now to clear up the last of the Christmas crackers, half eaten mince pies and crumpled party hats.

This entry covers a day trip I took to North Wales, Colwyn Bay in fact. I was coming together of reasons, the eve of the shortest day, the weather was bright and quite warm so not to be wasted and I wanted some cheese. All good reasons to be out and about as far as I’m concerned.

This will be a bit of a photobomb so don’t be expecting any deep analysis of the human condition etc. I went, I had a walk about, bought some very pleasing cheeses, ate some food, had a bit of a walk, then a drink, then came home. A simple as that.

Amanda’s Cafe on Abergele Road, as you can see, even on a cold day, very popular, so I traced my footsteps back towards the station. I have my favourites but I do like finding new ones. It’s the old “moving target is harder to hit routine.
Well a short walk later I found myself at the station end of Railway road in the town and Bobcats Cafe had cleared a little so I plonked myself down and had a very pleasant cheese & onion toastie. You see my plan had been, coming out on a cold day might make finding a seat in a cafe easier. Wrong on all counts.
This display was just up from Bobcats on Station Road, there’s something quite magical about black & white photography, there were a couple more of these Northern Eye displays dotted around the town.
Down by the shopping centre across from the railway station, my target for the day, you can keep your crystal meth and other pharmaceuticals, give me cheese every time and perhaps a glass of pleasing red or port. I have simple tastes………….
These are top top up the supplies I had bought earlier in the week but couldn’t manage to keep my fingers off. These should fare a lot better! **
** the train home, no they didn’t……..**
From my cheese buying I took a walk down under the railway line to the pier, formerly the Victoria Pier. Now very reduced after a sequence of unfortunate events through its history.
I carried along the prom from the pier towards Rhos on Sea, quite the invigorating walk on this crispy cold day. The tide was doing that to and fro dance making the boats bob about behind the breakwater.
Times past this would have taken you on to the now gone pier.
As a reward for making it this far in the cold I headed into Rayner’s Patissierie for a slice of lemon meringue pie and a latte. Lwemon is a fruit s as far as I’m concerned it’s part of my five a day.
By now the evening was quietly stealing in like a mouse in carpet slippers so I started back to Colwyn, passing the hardy souls that were still out on the beach.
The Christmas market was still open when I got back and who doesn’t like a hot sausage at Christmas time?
There was time enough for a pint in the Bay Hop across from the station, one of the pleasanter places to wait for my train.
My beer of choice on the day.

From there is was a quick few steps across to the station and home on a train busy with people in their glad rags heading for a night out in Chester.
