The travels, musings and thoughts of a man and his camera.

WREXHAM. A Trip Down The Borderlands Line.

Notice Board at the Ty Pawb Arts centre and venue on Charles Street. This used to be the People’s Market but after a period clossure it is now reborn in this new guise.

A few days back I took a trip down to Wrexham. The weather around these parts has slipped back into unfriendly/uncooperative mode but I didn’t feel like sitting in the house staring out of the window. It’s a relatively easy journey and it meant that I wouldn’t be sat sitting at home twiddling my thumbs. It was to be a day out with no set agenda, just go, see, eat some food, perhaps drink some beer.

The route I took was by train out through Liverpool, a change of trains at Bidston then down the spine of the Wirral to the now much reduce terminus of Wrexham Central now surrounded by the Island Green Retail Park. A brisk walk from there took me to The Cafe de Gales on Church Street, right by the impressive St. Giles Cathedral. This church is the site of the tomb of Elihu Yale, founder of Yale University in the States.

The cafe is a favourite, a delightful place, old school but in the good way that these places can often be. The cold weather prompted me towards the soup and sandwich combo, egg mayo on brown with a bowl of filling potato & cauliflower soup. From there it was walkabout time.

The Cafe de Galles. Clean, tidy and friendly with lovely food.
Great home cooking for a cold day, potato & cauliflower soup and egg mayo sandwiches.
The Butchers Market has been undrgoing some renovation, it doesn’t feel too heavy handed, these signs are wher the butchers stall was, not sure as yet if they are returning.
There’s always the chance of running into the occaisional Holywood VIP now that the local football club Wrexham AFC has attracted the interest of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
The Central Arcade leads up from the market to the town centre on Hope Street.
A Christmas Fair was just swinging into action on Queen’s Square when I got there, not often you see rollers kating gift boxes.
A Christmas Elf juggles a bit of fun and joy to liven up a dull day.
After the walk about I headed down to the High Street for a relaxing pint from one of my favourite brewerys. Joule’s and their Royal Oak.
I opted for a pint of the Slumbering Monk, odd name but a lovely pint.
The world being slowly put to rights on a cold Saturday evening.
