I think I might need to explain the title.
Chester is a fairly frequent destination for me, not too frequent to make myself bored with it but enough just to keep in touch with what’s going on. Drifting across the social media I noticed that a favourite eating place of mine, The Little Yellow Pig in Hoole Village has now opened an outlet in the city centre on Godstall Lane, I decided that I must investigate, I have a high maintenance waistline don’t forget.

If that wasn’t enough of a reason there was also a bar I wanted to try, I’ve been intrigued by the name for a while The Cavern Of The Curious Gnome. So having a Sunday going spare I thought why not?
I walked down from the railway station and into the city centre at Eastgate Street under the elegant Eastgate clock. From there it was a short walk up St. Werburgh Street to the top of Godstall Lane, and down to my target.
Luckily for me there’s a menu in the window, that always helps me get myself organised, I have a small brain that can get full and confused very quickly. The place has a really friendly atmosphere, order at the counter, seating upstairs. Being a bit of a toastie addict I went for the sourdough & goats cheese with a latte as I like to think I’m a bit posh when I’m out and about. Having used their Hoole outlet in the past I knew it would be good and it was. I left, happier and a bit fatter.

I walked along the Lane from the little pig and dropped down onto Eastgate Street again and headed down to Bridge Street and the Rows to go Gnome hunting. I found it easily enough once I realised that the Cavern was on the second floor. Before I went in I thought that I would extend my walk a bit further and head down to the River Dee and see what was occurrin’. Chester is on the Welsh border after all. A rowing event was in progress, you have to admire their energy and devotion, it wasn’t the warmest of days. Curiosity satisfied I headed back to the Rows on Bridge Street and entered the Cavern. The Gnome greets you at the top of the stairs, hard to miss in fact. The beer range is impressive, I settled for a pint of White Rat from the Ossett Brewery, sharp and refreshing it was, a decent wake up sort of pint.

All to soon it was time to start making tracks back home but it had been a successful day and a couple more places had been added to my little black book of going out information.
