The travels, musings and thoughts of a man and his camera.

THE PENNINES. Hartside to Melmerby.

At the Hartside Summit, a memorial bench takes in the view, across the Lake District to Scotland.
The Pennine hills rolling away to the Solway Firth.

Recently I took a trip up to Newcastle and on the return I came back by my favourite through Alston and over the summit at Hartside and down into Melmerby and on to Penrith. The view from the top is spectacular, from the Lakes across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Here’s the route down from Hartside Summit. Not one of my usual posts, but I enjoy the area and the drive down so I thought I would share. Just for information, I don’t drive some sort of souped up monster speed machine, it’s a 23 year old Nissan Micra and the mobile fitted nicely into a slot on the dashboard.

From Hartside to Melmerby, Cumbria. A road you have to keep your wits about you.

A curiosity you might pass on the way out of Hexham towards Hartside is this isolated tower chimney stands near Haydon Bridge on the B6305. This is the Stublick Chimney and was once part of the lead mining smelter complex down in the valley about a mile or so down in the valley. A ground level flue system connected the two, the remains of which canbe traced through the fields.
A more modern example of architecture stands nearby, “they” may be listening…..
