Well where has the time gone? We parted company at Manchester Piccadilly as I was making my way to York. Let’s try and catch up with one another.
I’d booked an advance ticket to Leeds and then a ticket on to York. It saved me a few pounds, money that goes towards coffee/cake/food/beer, tick whichever tickles your fancy. The services between the two cities are frequent so there’s no problem there. So Combined with the early start I made it to York a little after ten.
While I enjoy a coffee on a station, it’s a chance to gather my thoughts and people watch over a brew, this was a Saturday and York station was obviously busy, so I thought I would track down a place I remembered from an earlier visit.

Leaving the station I turned left and headed off to Micklegate, one of the entries through the city walls. For some reason I’ve always found this a less busy way into the city centre, most people head directly across from the station and go over Lendal Bridge. Anyway, passing under the impressive Micklegate Bar I walked up towards the Minster and came to Devine Coffee, the sun was shining and there were seats outside. Brew time.
Slightly fattened up and relaxed with some time spent watching the world go by I headed off on my explorations. I had no specific targets for the day, the medieval street pattern of York lends itself to a hide and seek sort of walking. You don’t have to look for history, it leaps out at you from every street corner. From cheeky gargoyles on the Minster to streets and buildings of great wonkyness. I know that’s not a proper archaeological term but just go with me.

After a pleasant start the weather had put its silly had on and bursts of rail came and went randomly for a couple of hours but there’s plenty of shelter, from Roman times onwards to make use of. On one sheltering event I had lunch in a hog roast place, a large Yorkshire ( what else? ) pudding with a full roar dinner inside it. I was glad the table had strong legs , that’s all I’ll say. Tt wasn’t a thing for eating in a hurry, fast food it wasn’t.

The rain had gone into hiding by the time I’d chomped my way though my lunch it so it was off for another bit of walking, at a slower speed this time, as the afternoon was beginning to have thoughts about becoming the evening.
I’ll call a halt here and follow up with the rest of my amble around, I think you’d welcome a break from my ramblings.
See you again from York in the next post or two.
