A bit of a then and now post, again from Wales. I took a trip down to Rhyl on the North Wales coast to take look at the revamped Queens market. It’s a project that seems to have been dawdling along for a while, a side effect of streams of project updates is that I end up feeling that things have been going on for longer than they have.
The photos are from December 2019 and August of this year, when the revamped market re-opened.
The new building’s footprint is a whole lot smaller now, a lot of the older buildings have gone leaving a core of a food hall and an adjacent events area. It’s a whole lot more streamlined now, the present newness making it almost sterile, Something that time and usage will soften.
It should work, as a step up to bring the people back to the town. Like many domestic resorts Rhyl has not had its troubles to seek of late. Ive included a few shots from an earlier visit, before the demolition and clearing began, where some of the ghosts of the buildings previous lives were still present. One ghost sadly was never tracked down, that of a mini Venetian network of canals that was supposed to give people rides through the building’s basement. Now that would have been something worthy of preservation

That’s my first visit to the new market, I’ll take another trip in a couple of months time, see how things are bedding in.
