The Market Square laid out in front of the castle entrance with seats to pass the time of day.
Right, lets have a little bit of a photo bomb from Easter Saturday’s visit to Ludlow Market. Not been for about a year and I had a Saturday going spare in amongst all the to-ing and fro-ing of Easter. So I booked myself a train ticket and enjoyed the ride down along the border route through Chester.
The imposing castle gateway sits at the top of the market place.
Together with Shrewsbury, Ludow is a favourite stopping off point along that stretch of the Welsh Marches. One of its many attractions is the market, held in front of the castle. It’s a lively affair and I enjoy the atmosphere, the sounds, sights and smells. Often getting a tea or coffee from the market and watching the activity from a nearby seat. The weather wasn’t at its friendliest on the day but it was the UK and it was a Bank Holiday so nothing unusual with that.
Anyway, that’s enough rambling from me. Lets hit the photos.
Market stall, fruit and vegetables, pick your own, munch on at your leisure. Every market should have a pot stall, it’s the law. It’s not all just fruit and vegetables, as good as they are. See that Kiev camera, centre bottom, I’m really regretting I didn’t look closer at that. ( Translation, I should have brought it home with me…..)
There’s a wide variety of local produce, fresh meat, cheese etc plus the town has a decent spread of place to eat. If you want to starve in Ludlow you’re really going to have to put some real effort into it.
Ahh, a cheese stall, a properly varied selection too. Just the thing to feast on for the journey back home. I know. I did.If that stall isn’t enough for you there is a cheese shop, The Mouse Trap, handily adjacent at the top of the nearby Church StreetAnd as ever, you can get your food on the move, the Silver Grill stands ready for your custom, bacon roll, burger coffee etc. It was a little cool on the day for me to be sitting outside, so I went to the pub.Came here on my last visit, enjoyed it again on this visit.I enjoyed a plate of dirty fries with pulled brisket while soaking up the atmosphere ( and a pint, Slumbering Monk, just right).Well the occasional showers would keep your plants watered until you got home.Hmm, asparagus and a poached egg, drizzled in melted butter, the diet can start tomorrow. Perhaps strawberries and cream to follow?
I took a bit of a wander through the nest of streets by the market as well, just to see what was occuring.
The Butter Market and the buildings opposite seem to be deep in conversation at the top of Broad Street. The church of St. Laurence in the background is busy keeping an eye on them.A bit of a vanishing breed in these times, a proper butcher. Local produce, not entombed in plastic wrap.I love a place that has a stationary shop. I have a bit of a thing for stationary shops, all those pens and note books etc. They appeal to my well buried sense of order and neatness that doesn’t get out much.
